Save The Planet! Work From Home!

By Paul Duxbury | May 13, 2009

You’ve always known that working from home had its perks, work when you want to, more time to do the things you love doing, being your own boss and making your own decisions. Now working from home has yet another advantage that you probably weren’t aware of yet is a positive symptom of the working from home lifestyle, the environment.

Whether you currently work from home or are interested in doing so, did you know that you are doing something beneficial for the environment at the same time?

You immediately reduce traffic by logging onto the information superhighway rather than to the everyday concrete jungle variety. Let your friends deal with the daily ritual of chaos and mayhem that takes place during the usual morning rush hour, while you casually and calmly make your way to your computer.

You avoid the usual mad dash in the mornings and your regular dose of road rage but you also save in fuel costs that you would normally spend travelling to the office each day, this alone can save thousands of dollars a year and you’re not at the mercy of oil price fluctuations. Until we adopt more reliable, mainstream energy alternatives we just have to use less fuel, working from home more either through your job or by telecommuting through self employment, presents a valid solution to this problem.

By working from home you also reduce the amount of pollution associated with your daily commute in to work, not to mention the all too common toxic fumes that you pay for the privilege of when sitting idly in traffic jams. As the saying goes “there’s a little bit of un-tuned car in all of us”, which is true, we breathe in everything from the environment around us, even if our windows are closed. Put it this way, if you can smell the fumes from the cars around you, you’re inhaling it.

You can communicate via phone and email and use little more energy than from the sun’s natural light in your favorite room and your energy saver computer.

Not only is the buzz surrounding the push to go green about saving money by incorporating green aspects into your lifestyle but now you can actually make money from it.

Here are a few tips on how “Going Green” can make you money:

1. Have you always deep down had a secret passion for catering? Well now the hottest thing in catering circles is “eco catering”.

You would be amazed at how savvy people are becoming and with the increasing flow of information and awareness about planet preservation people are opting more for environmentally friendly alternatives to the norm, including catering. Not only is it kinder to the ecosystem but it also provides a unique way to celebrate a special day. How many people get to take home seedlings as a gift?, a fun departure from the usual goody bag that ends up used and discarded in the trash can. Take a look online at some eco catering firms and call around to do your homework to see if this might be your life’s calling.

2. How about becoming a virtual assistant? Through www.elance.com and www.warriorforum.com to name a couple, present an entire industry keen for information with a shortage of good writers to provide it.

If you enjoy writing and would like to provide your services then try your hand at advertizing yourself there. You could try writing articles, posting articles, posting blog content, writing ebooks, researching, spellchecking and lots more. This is a great way to make some extra cash and provides real work opportunities compared to the typical data entry scams you see plastered all over the internet. The wonderful thing about this type of work is that it’s practically carbon footprint free. You don’t use paper products, energy for travel, everything is virtual and requires only the energy to power your computer.

Don’t forget to read the rules of what is acceptable practice before you post. It’s a great idea to provide writing samples of your work and starting at a slightly lower rate if you’re relatively new to the field and want to build a bit of “street cred”, so to speak. Once you build a base of satisfied clients along with some great testimonials, charge accordingly. Always keep an open channel of communication with your clients, get work out in a timely manner and let them know if any unforeseen snafu’s crop up and how you plan to fix them. Provide top notch work and you will always have satisfied customers. In essence, treat your clients the way you would want to be treated.

3. Sell digital products. The best environmental solution to business. Selling digital products is fantastic because they’re not physical products meaning they don’t require the usual postage costs that come with delivery, or the emissions linked to transportation costs. This is why profit margins for digitals items are so high because they usually don’t involve any other expense other than time, if you decide to create everything yourself.

Look online to see what people are buying. Try www.amazon.com and www.magazines.com, when you can see what your potential customers are willing to pay money for you can create products of your own.

Remember in everything you do, always to do your research first. Weigh up the pro’s with the con’s before leaping because working from home isn’t for everyone. That’s great if you love your job too, just see if your boss might give you a few days a month to work from home if you’re interested in doing so.

By doing your part to reduce pollution emissions, even through something as simple as driving your car less does make a huge difference to both your carbon footprint impact and your emissions into the atmosphere that affect climate. Imagine if more people opted to work more from home, even in their current jobs, the collective difference we could all make.

Working from home and the types of jobs you can do are only limited by your imagination. Do what you love doing and you’ll never work a single day in your life.

Happy telecommuting.
