Reversing The Polarity and Flowing Rivers!

By Paul Duxbury | Oct 18, 2008

Today’s been an extraordinary day in a rather ordinary way! It’s been a day when I have been in very reflective mood and pondering on a number of converging streams of thought in my little old brain! I often talk about life as being like a flowing river. A river which at times is fast flowing and even choppy and at other times seems beset by calm. As the river journeys along there are small streams which feed it with fresh water and new life. Some of these streams can help to change the speed of the river and sometimes even the very direction of the river.

What’s all that got to do with anything you may be wondering! Well in my life there are various streams which are feeding into the flowing river and making me think! Amongst them a discussion earlier this week with Martin Gibbons of PeopleMaps which I am hopeful will turn into something really positive. If things transpire how I hope they will it will enable me to take a direction which will enable me to do some real good. At the same time as benefiting me and my much better other half. Then this morning John Taylor pointed me in the direction of an item about the Gurkha Campaign for Justice which moved me to tears – and then prompted me to take affirmative action to try to help in some small way. Then as the afternoon moved on, and we had navigated the hordes of supermarket shoppers (now I remember why we use Online Shopping!) I was sat watching some inspiring videos and then chanced to go into the Warrior Forum!

There were some interesting threads which caught my eye. There was one in particular which addressed why people do Internet Marketing or try to earn extra money from Internet Marketing. Twitter seems to be flavour of the month amongst the chattering classes of Internet Marketing and so invariably there were some about the various aspects of it. In one of the threads, bang in the middle of it in fact, someone had posted a single line “twitter can I make money from it?” I breathed an exasperated sigh and moved on! But it set the old brain cells whirring again!

What is it about people that they are fixated on the me/my/mine mentality and see everything simply or solely in terms of how can I make money! My experience has been that when people focus solely or exclusively on me/my/mine they tend to find themselves up a creek without a paddle sooner or later – to continue the water bound theme of this post. If we reverse polarity and think about how we can help others, contribute to others, add value to those around us and to our world then the good things we want flow towards us. So the reversing polarity of the title of this post is about encouraging you at whatever stage you are at in your business life to think of them/they/their rather than me/my/mine and see what a difference it makes!

I remember a good while ago now another friend of mine Dr Mani asked me why I did what I do online – my answer was “so that I can offer coaching and support to those most in need and who cannot afford to pay” and it remains as true today as it did then. Yes I want the good life and happiness for me and mine but I know that I can achieve it through helping them and theirs!
